On the occasion of Veer Baal Diwas, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paid rich tributes to the Sahibzades, Mata Gujri Ji and Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, calling their lives and teachings a “source of inspiration for all citizens.” He was speaking at a Vishesh Shaheedi Samagam titled Safar‑E‑Shahadat, organised by the All Jammu Kashmir Sikh Coordination Committee at Gurdwara Digiana Ashram.
“We remember Sahibzades’ unparalleled bravery, sacrifice and courage, and the commitment of Mata Gujri Ji and Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji,” the Lt Governor said, adding that the supreme sacrifices of the Sikh Gurus inspire everyone “to uphold the unity and integrity of the nation” and build a strong, prosperous India rooted in diversity. He described the Sikh tradition, imbued with devotion, valour and glory, as a true embodiment of the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”.
Sinha said the path of righteousness paved by the Sikh Gurus forms a foundational strength for modern India’s inclusive development and that their legacy continues to empower those on the frontlines of nation-building. He also recalled the martyrdom of Baba Moti Ram Mehra and his family, terming their sacrifice “a testament to the human spirit and loyalty.”
The Lt Governor highlighted a series of historic measures taken under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership to honour Sikh heritage and legacy, including justice to victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, FCRA approval for Sri Harmandir Sahib to enable global sangat participation, the Kartarpur Sahib corridor, rejuvenation of the Jallianwala Bagh memorial and promotion of academic research on Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings. He said these steps ensure the Gurus’ message of universal brotherhood remains a guiding force for India’s future.
Praising the Sikh community’s historic role in nation-building and its efforts against social discrimination, Sinha urged citizens to honour the Gurus’ sacrifices by fostering a society anchored in unity and progress. “There has been a new dynamism in our country and let us resolve today to stand together and stand firm in our determination to build Viksit Bharat of our dreams,” he said.
Members of the All Jammu Kashmir Sikh Coordination Committee expressed gratitude to the Lt Governor for fulfilling several long-pending demands of the Sikh community. Committee chairman S. Ajit Singh placed a demand to rename Veer Baal Diwas as “Sahibzade Shahadat Diwas”, to which Sinha assured that the memorandum would be forwarded to the Government of India for consideration.
On the occasion, the Lt Governor also felicitated a newly married Sikh couple whose marriage had been registered under the Anand Marriage Act in the Union Territory, terming it a significant step in recognising Sikh personal law.
