Srinagar, October 29, 2023: In a distressing incident, an off-duty police officer was critically injured when unidentified terrorists opened fire in Srinagar’s Eidgah area on Sunday. The officer, identified as Inspector Masroor Ahmad, was shot while playing cricket with local boys at the Eidgah ground, leaving him in critical condition. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Kashmir Zone Police reported on X (formerly Twitter), “#Terrorists fired upon & injured Inspector Masroor Ahmad near Eidgah, Srinagar. He was immediately shifted to the hospital for treatment. Preliminary #investigation reveals that a pistol was used in this #terror crime. Area cordoned off, case registered.”
Security forces promptly cordoned off the area to capture the attackers and investigate the incident further. This event follows a recent ceasefire violation along the international border and highlights the ongoing security concerns in the region. A meeting of top officials from Jammu and Kashmir and various security agencies was held to discuss the role of foreign terrorists in Kashmir.
While there has been a decrease in such incidents this year, the attack underscores the terrorists’ focus on soft targets, particularly off-duty police officers and civilians, as a means to instill fear in the region. Security experts have noted that these attacks are typically carried out by hybrid terrorists, often armed with pistols or, in some cases, an AK-47.
The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced in the region and the need for continued vigilance in maintaining peace and stability.
