Srinagar, Aug 20 (BuzzBytes): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly next month, where the current situation in West Asia, rising tensions in the region and matters relating to the Strait of Hormuz are likely to be among the significant subjects of discussion.
According to the provisional timetable that has been issued, Prime Minister Modi will address the General Assembly on September 25 at 3 pm, where he will place India’s position on various international and regional matters before world leaders.
Prime Minister Modi has taken part in several high-level sessions of the United Nations General Assembly since assuming office in 2014. His participation this time too is being described as important for the articulation of India’s position and priorities at the global level.
The 81st session of the General Assembly will be held under the presidency of Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh, who was elected President of the General Assembly in June.
The theme of this year’s session has been set as “Restoring Trust, Managing Change”, under which attention is expected to focus on confidence building at the global level, international cooperation and dealing with a rapidly changing world situation.
The high-level week of the General Assembly will begin on September 22. As per the customary United Nations order, President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will be the first head of state to open the general debate, followed by United States President Donald Trump.
Under United Nations protocol, heads of state, including presidents and monarchs, speak first, followed by heads of government and other senior officials.
As per the provisional programme, President of China Xi Jinping and President of Russia Vladimir Putin are not expected to attend the session. According to reports, Xi Jinping will not attend the General Assembly session as he is to take part in a summit meeting with United States President Donald Trump in Washington the same week.
Despite the likely absence of the leaders of the two major world powers, a wide-ranging debate on global politics, security, the economy and ongoing regional conflicts is expected at the session.
President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian will address the General Assembly on September 23. His address is expected to include the current situation in West Asia, rising tensions in the region and matters relating to the Strait of Hormuz among its important subjects.
As per the provisional schedule, Prime Minister of Bangladesh Tarique Rahman will address the General Assembly on September 24, while Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif will address the Assembly on the afternoon of September 25.
Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address is scheduled for the same day, which is expected to draw particular international attention to the speeches of the heads of government of the two important South Asian countries.
