Srinagar, Jan 10 – Nearly a month following the Supreme Court’s endorsement of the Union Government’s decision to revoke Article 370, three review petitions were lodged in the Apex Court on Tuesday, challenging its verdict.According to details sourced from the Kashmir buzzbytes three distinct review pleas were submitted against the court’s verdict that validated the abrogation of Article 370 by the Union Government on August 5, 2019. The petitioners include Muzaffar Iqbal Khan, representing himself, along with the Jammu & Kashmir Awami National Conference and the Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Movement.Confirming his submission, Muzaffar Iqbal Khan stated, “I have filed the review petition today.” On December 11, 2023, a five-judge constitution bench, led by the Chief Justice of India, rendered a unanimous decision, upholding the Union government’s 2019 move to revoke Article 370. The Supreme Court further affirmed the validity of two constitutional orders issued by the President on August 5 and 6, 2019.While the court refrained from addressing the reorganization of Jammu & Kashmir into two Union Territories, it mandated that the restoration of statehood should occur promptly. The Court’s directive came after the Solicitor General assured that the region’s status as a Union Territory was temporary and that statehood would be reinstated.Additionally, the Election Commission of India has been instructed to facilitate elections for the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, 2024.The filing of these review petitions underscores the continued legal and political discourse surrounding the contentious issue of Article 370’s revocation.
