In the beautiful valleys of Kashmir, where nature flourishes in the form of forests, mountains, wetlands, and wildlife, one teacher has dedicated his life to promoting environmental awareness among students and communities. Rouf Ahmad Rather, a government teacher from Dara Harwan, Srinagar, has emerged as a leading environmental educator, wildlife enthusiast, photographer, and youth mentor in Jammu & Kashmir.

Currently serving at Government Boys High School Habak Homehair, Srinagar, Rouf Ahmad Rather believes that education should extend far beyond textbooks and classroom walls. According to him, schools are not only places for academic learning but also institutions that shape responsible citizens who understand the value of protecting nature and preserving the environment for future generations.

Inspired by the breathtaking natural beauty of Kashmir since childhood, Rouf developed a deep love for forests, birds, wildlife, and biodiversity. This passion gradually became the foundation of his mission to connect young students with nature and environmental conservation. Over the years, he has introduced several innovative teaching methods and practical learning activities that encourage students to explore and appreciate the environment around them.

Rouf Ahmad Rather began his journey as a naturalist and nature photographer with the Wildlife Conservation Fund (WCF), where he worked as a volunteer under the guidance of Advocate Nadeem Qadri — a noted conservationist, environmental lawyer, Amicus Curiae of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court, and founder of WCF. His time with WCF helped strengthen his passion for wildlife conservation, bird watching, nature photography, and environmental awareness.

His educational initiatives include nature walks, bird-watching sessions, plantation drives, biodiversity awareness programs, cleanliness campaigns, eco-awareness activities during school assemblies, and awareness campaigns against plastic pollution and poor waste management. Through these activities, students not only gain knowledge but also develop emotional connections with nature and wildlife.

One of the most remarkable achievements of Rouf Ahmad Rather is transforming Government Boys High School Habak Homehair into the first polythene- and plastic-free government school in Jammu & Kashmir. Understanding the serious environmental damage caused by single-use plastics, he launched awareness campaigns within the school campus and motivated students and staff members to adopt eco-friendly practices. His efforts successfully turned the school into a model institution for environmental sustainability and responsible living, inspiring many other schools across the region.

Rouf Ahmad Rather has also played a significant role in promoting biodiversity awareness among students. Kashmir is blessed with rich ecological diversity, and he strongly believes that younger generations must understand the importance of protecting this natural heritage. Through field visits, bird-watching programs, and interactive environmental sessions, he encourages students to observe nature closely and appreciate the delicate balance of ecosystems.

A passionate wildlife lover, Rouf frequently visits Dachigam National Park, one of the most important wildlife-protected areas in Jammu & Kashmir. His deep connection with Dachigam has strengthened his understanding of conservation, wildlife behavior, and ecological systems. The forests, landscapes, and wildlife of Dachigam continue to inspire his environmental work and educational activities.

Apart from teaching and environmental activism, Rouf Ahmad Rather is also widely appreciated for his outstanding nature and wildlife photography. Through his camera lens, he captures the breathtaking beauty of Kashmir’s landscapes, forests, birds, and wildlife. His photographs are not merely artistic creations; they also carry powerful messages about conservation and the need to protect nature.

His photography skills have earned him recognition on various platforms, and he has won several photography competitions for his visually inspiring work. His photographs and environmental contributions have also been published in magazines and publications, where his efforts toward environmental storytelling have been highly appreciated.

In recognition of his exceptional contribution to environmental education, Rouf Ahmad Rather received national recognition in 2024 when he became the first Green Teacher Awardee from Jammu & Kashmir. The prestigious award was presented by the Sanctuary Nature Foundation, Mumbai, bringing pride to his school, district, and the entire Union Territory. In the same year, he was also honored with the Best Teacher Award at the school level for his dedication, discipline, innovative teaching methods, and continuous efforts toward student development.

The journey of Rouf Ahmad Rather reflects determination, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to education and environmental conservation. Today, he stands as a role model for teachers, students, photographers, and environmental enthusiasts across Jammu & Kashmir. Through his work, he continues to inspire society with the message that protecting nature is not only a responsibility but also a way of life.
