Stretching across an impressive 69,240 hectares and yielding a staggering 206,430 metric tonnes annually, Kashmir unquestionably leads India in walnut production, contributing a substantial 90% to the national yield. However, despite its immense significance, the walnut industry grapples with various obstacles that obstruct its full potential.
Challenges in the Walnut Industry
One of the foremost challenges plaguing this industry is the scarcity of high-quality planting material. Many of the walnut trees in Kashmir are aging and unproductive, necessitating the introduction of new, high-yielding varieties. Furthermore, walnuts are self-pollinating, but unpredictable weather conditions often lead to subpar pollination rates. The tree density in Kashmir falls far short of the recommended 200 trees per hectare, with an average of merely 100, which significantly affects productivity. Additionally, walnut trees exhibit an extended juvenile period of 10-12 years before they bear fruit, demanding substantial patience from the farmers.

To address these pressing issues, the government of Jammu and Kashmir has embarked on a series of measures aimed at enhancing the walnut industry. These measures encompass the establishment of nurseries dedicated to producing high-yield walnut seedlings, guidance provided to farmers to improve pollination rates, incentives for higher tree density, and ongoing research efforts to reduce the lengthy juvenile period.

3. Ladders and Boots: The use of tall ladders and non-slip boots for safe tree climbing is essential.
4. Safety Nets: Employing safety nets or stacks of hay around trees can cushion falls in case of accidents.
