Srinagar, Aug 29 (BuzzBytes): During the hearing of the Article 370 abrogation case, the Supreme Court queried the Centre about the anticipated timeline for reinstating Jammu and Kashmir’s status as a State. The court’s question arose in the context of a batch of pleas challenging the Article 370 abrogation.
BuzzBytes reports indicate that Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, highlighted that the commitment to restore J&K’s Statehood had been expressed on the parliamentary floor. Mehta stated that efforts are underway and that once normalcy returns, steps will be taken to reinstate the Statehood, with the top court emphasizing the significance of restoring democracy.
In addition, the Supreme Court raised the query of whether a State could be transformed into a Union Territory and whether it is possible to create a UT from a State. In response, SG Mehta pointed out that there are no restrictions, citing examples of Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh, which all transitioned from Union Territories to States.
