Administrative Council Approves Creation of 5 Special Courts for Trials under NDPS Act

Jmmu, February 2: The Administrative Council (AC) under the chairmanship of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha approved the creation of five Special Courts, each in the districts of Anantnag, Baramulla, Jammu, Pulwama, and Srinagar in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Special Courts are designated for the trial of offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The approval includes the allocation of posts, supporting staff, and necessary infrastructure for these Special Courts.The decision is in compliance with the orders of the High Court in cases titled “Thana Singh vs Central Bureau of Narcotics” and “Arshad Ahmad Allaie vs UT of J&K.” A resolution from the Committee of Judges of J&K High Court recommended the creation of Special Courts in districts with a pending caseload of more than 500, a recommendation approved by the Chief Justice. The move is expected to have an annual financial implication of Rs. 4.65 Crores for the Union Territory.
