Gulmarg, February 21: The Winter Sports Capital, Gulmarg, came alive with the commencement of the 4th Khelo India Winter Games, showcasing remarkable performances in Nordic Skiing. In the Nordic Women Skiing for Sprint 1.6 KM, Bhavani Thekkada from Karnataka secured the top spot, with Selma Soreng and Sapna of ITBP claiming second and third positions. Meanwhile, in the Nordic Men Sprint 10 KM, the Army dominated all three positions, with Padma Namgail, Mangeet, and Rameez Ahmad Paddar clinching first, second, and third places, respectively.The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from athletes representing various states and organizations, including ITBP, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Haryana, and Uttarakhand. The competitors displayed their prowess against the snowy slopes, creating a thrilling spectacle for spectators.Geeta Thakur, a Snowboarding coach from Uttarakhand, praised the improved weather conditions and expressed confidence in the high spirits of players to showcase their potential. She acknowledged the efforts of J&K Sports Council for the excellent arrangements, including transportation and accommodation.Rajesh Thakur, a Nordic Skiing player representing ITBP, shared his excitement about the improved snow accumulation and pleasant weather. He thanked the Central and UT governments for enhancing facilities across the destinations, making the Winter Games a more enriching experience for participants.Joginder Kumar from Haryana highlighted the ample time provided for practice and preparation, emphasizing how Khelo India Winter Games open vast opportunities for the young generation to pursue a professional career in winter sports.The games kicked off with traditional local cultural presentations, featuring the Bandpether, creating a festive atmosphere. The Snow Leopard Mascot, symbolizing agility and strength, added charm to the event, with Adil, an employee of J&K Sports Council, captivating the audience with choreographed moves for the second time in Khelo India Winter Games.
