DC Kupwara Leads Narco Coordination Centre Meeting to Tackle Drug Abuse

In a proactive step toward combating drug abuse and the narcotic trade, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ayushi Sudan chaired a district-level committee meeting under the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) in Kupwara on November 25. The meeting aimed to assess the progress made on previous directives and devise strategies to curb drug abuse and the narcotics trade in the district.

During the session, several issues concerning drug addiction instances, hotspots of drug abuse, and ongoing measures were extensively discussed.

The Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Kupwara informed the chair that over the last three years, 367 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the district, resulting in 603 arrests and 56 detentions under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

Moreover, it was disclosed that 9 Panchayats in the district have been declared drug-free (NASHA MUKT), while 42 Panchayats are under scrutiny for verification.

Emphasizing the need for credible and accountable data, DC Ayushi Sudan stressed the significance of data authentication.

The ADC was directed to establish a committee at the Tehsil level to identify addiction cases and facilitate their referral to drug de-addiction centers.

Furthermore, the DC instructed the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the establishment of a Drug De-addiction Centre at Tangdar, incorporating provisions for tele-OPD.

A calendar of drug de-addiction awareness camps at Tehsil levels was mandated, alongside organizing counseling sessions facilitated by concerned Tehsildars and Block Medical Officers (BMOs) to engage addicts and their families.

DC Sudan urged the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to collaborate with the Health department to schedule seminars and other educational activities in district educational institutions, involving Mid-Level Health Providers (MLHPs) for student sensitization.

Highlighting the importance of post-treatment follow-ups, the DC urged health authorities to track recovered individuals and highlight success stories.

Additionally, the Drug Inspector was tasked with ensuring 100% CCTV camera installations in chemist shops and relevant locations to monitor drug-related activities effectively.

The enforcement agencies received directives to take action under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) against those selling tobacco products within a 100-meter radius of educational institutions.

Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance against the drug menace, DC Ayushi Sudan stressed the necessity for sustained and coordinated efforts from all stakeholders.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including ADC Gh. Nabi Bhat, SSP Yougal Manhas, SP Dawood Ayoob, ACP, DIO, DSWO, Tehsildars, DFO Kamraj, and other concerned officers.
