Democracy Vital for Safeguarding Rights in J&K, Says National Conference General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar

Srinagar, 22 Feb:National Conference General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar emphasized the essential role of democracy in restoring a sense of entitlement, security, and enfranchisement among the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Presiding over a meeting of prominent block office bearers of Harwan-Khanyar-Munawarabad Block at the party headquarters in Srinagar, Sagar discussed upcoming party programs and parliamentary elections.Addressing the participants, Sagar highlighted the significance of democracy in India’s identity, playing a pivotal role in the nation’s struggle for independence and shaping public life post-liberation. He expressed concern over the denial of democracy to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, citing the abrogation of Article 370.Sagar criticized the misinformed propaganda surrounding Article 370, stating that it provided people with ownership rights on lands and benefits like free education. He attributed the abrogation of Article 370 to undemocratic and unconstitutional actions, leading to repercussions for the people of Jammu.Reflecting on the turbulent period post-1990, Sagar acknowledged the destruction of Jammu and Kashmir’s infrastructure and the absence of democracy and work culture. However, he highlighted the efforts of the National Conference in gradually improving the environment, building schools, colleges, bridges, roads, and providing government jobs.Sagar emphasized the welfare work undertaken by the National Conference for the development of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the party’s contributions cannot be replicated. He critiqued those who merely talk about peace and development today, asserting that the National Conference has a track record of substantial work for the welfare of the people.Recalling the bold step taken by the National Conference in participating in the 1996 elections when few were willing, Sagar highlighted the party’s commitment to safeguarding the people of Jammu and Kashmir during challenging times.
