Social reformer, campaigner, and public speaker, Bilal Bhat, has raised a crucial concern regarding the non-payment of wages to Anganwadi workers and helpers operating under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme in Jammu and Kashmir. In a statement released on Tuesday, he highlighted the dire situation faced by these dedicated workers who have been deprived of their wages for several months.

Bhat emphasized the relentless efforts put forth by these scheme workers who actively contribute to the implementation of various government initiatives. They remain committed, attending events, programs, seminars, and even stepping up during disasters. Despite their unwavering dedication, these workers are facing delays in receiving their rightful wages, including the pending central share for several months.

The social reformer expressed concern over the administrative apathy towards the genuine issues faced by Anganwadi workers and helpers. He pointed out that the delay in releasing wages is not just a financial setback but also denies them crucial social security benefits, including promotions, gratuity, pension, provident fund, and medical facilities.

The ICDS scheme, recognized as the country’s most comprehensive and multi-dimensional program, holds immense significance in uplifting young Indian children facing poverty and deprivation. Originating as an experimental initiative in 33 blocks during 1975-76, the ICDS program has evolved into a monumental effort with far-reaching impacts. It serves as India’s commitment to the well-being of its children, addressing challenges such as malnutrition, morbidity, reduced learning capacity, and mortality.

Bhat urged authorities to promptly address the issue, emphasizing that the release of wages is not just a matter of financial compensation but a crucial step towards acknowledging the dedicated service of Anganwadi workers and helpers. As they play a pivotal role in the holistic development of children and communities, ensuring their timely compensation is essential for sustaining their commitment and motivation.
