Empowering Anganwadi Warriors: Government Boosts Incentives, Expands Health Coverage, and Enhances Opportunities for Workers and Helpers”

New Delhi, 07 FEB 2024In a significant move towards uplifting Anganwadi Workers and Helpers, the Government of India unveils a comprehensive set of initiatives, including a substantial honorarium increase, expanded health coverage under Ayushman Bharat, and enhanced opportunities for growth.The honorarium for Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) at main Anganwadi Centers has been raised from Rs.3,000/- to Rs.4,500/- per month, with additional performance-linked incentives. Mini-AWC workers and helpers also witness a significant hike, ensuring fair compensation for their invaluable services.Aiming for inclusive healthcare, all Anganwadi Workers and Helpers across the country are now covered under Ayushman Bharat, offering health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family annually for secondary and tertiary medical care.The government emphasizes its commitment to the well-being of these frontline workers, providing maternity leave, annual leaves, and a set of two uniforms per annum. The introduction of social security insurance schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, adds an extra layer of financial security.To recognize their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, Anganwadi Workers and Helpers engaged in related tasks are provided insurance cover of Rs.50 lakh under the “Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package.”Promotional opportunities have been enhanced, with 50% of Anganwadi Worker posts to be filled by promoting Anganwadi Helpers and 50% of Supervisor posts by promoting experienced Anganwadi Workers.The government has also urged states to encourage eligible Anganwadi Workers and Helpers to enroll in the voluntary Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-Dhan (PM-SYM) Pension Scheme for old-age protection.Leveraging technology, the ‘Poshan Tracker’ application ensures transparency and efficiency in delivery support systems at Anganwadi Centres. The government has provided smartphones and internet connectivity charges to Anganwadi Workers to digitize and automate their work.This holistic approach signifies the government’s commitment to recognizing the vital role played by Anganwadi Workers and Helpers in the nation’s development and ensuring their overall well-being.
