GDC Pampore Commemorates International Women’s Day

Mir Muzafar 09/ March 2024In a vibrant celebration, Government Degree College (GDC) Pampore marked International Women’s Day on March 9, focusing on acknowledging women’s achievements globally and addressing key issues related to gender equality, especially in terms of economic empowerment.Under the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,” the event emphasized the crucial role of investing in women’s empowerment and economic opportunities to expedite progress towards gender equality. Principal Prof. (Dr) Huda Galzai, in her welcome address, highlighted the remarkable contributions of women in society. Dr. Galzai emphasized economic independence, decision-making power, equity, and gender equality as essential aspects of women’s empowerment.Prof. (Dr) Samina Yesvi, Coordinator of the Women’s Development Cell at the college, delivered the keynote address, focusing on inclusivity, gender sensitivity, and economic sustainability. The event featured guest speakers, including three young women entrepreneurs from Kashmir: Sana Imtiyaz (founder of Sweet Temptations Bakery), Nava Shah (Jamkle Jars), and Saima Shafi (Potter girl of Kashmir). These entrepreneurs shared their inspiring success stories, serving as motivation for aspiring women to pursue their ambitions and contribute to economic empowerment and growth.Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Malik, Head of the Islamic Studies department, enlightened the audience about how Islamic principles align with feminist ideologies. He emphasized the importance of interpreting Islamic teachings in a contemporary context that promotes gender equality and social justice.The event witnessed a large gathering of students and staff members, fostering awareness, inspiration, and discussions on the critical issues surrounding women’s empowerment.
