Srinagar,As part of the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2023 campaign, a nationwide cleanliness drive, and in commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2, 2023, the Income Tax Department of Jammu and Kashmir undertook comprehensive cleanliness initiatives and mass awareness programs across the Union Territory. This ambitious campaign aimed to transform cities into cleaner and more environmentally responsible urban centers.


The efforts were not limited to the city limits but extended to some of the most iconic locations in the region. A cleanliness drive was organized at the picturesque Dal Lake, focusing on areas around Nishat Bagh and Makai Park in Srinagar. Simultaneously, a similar initiative took place at the Parking Lot, just opposite Vishal Mega Mart, near Aaykar Bhawan in Jammu. These efforts marked significant strides toward making our cities cleaner and greener.
To create awareness among the public about the importance of cleanliness, a “Nukkad Natak” (street play) was performed by the dedicated team led by Rajneesh Gupta, Income Tax Officer, at the Government Higher Secondary School in Khanna Chargal. This lively performance aimed to convey the message of cleanliness and social responsibility.
The launch of this cleanliness initiative on October 1, 2023, reflects the unwavering commitment of the Income Tax Department to fostering a cleaner and healthier living environment for all citizens.
In Srinagar, the event was conducted under the esteemed guidance of M.P Singh, Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, Srinagar. Notable officers such as Vandana Mohite (Commissioner of Income Tax), Shakil Ganie (Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax), and Syed Junaid Adil (Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax) were actively involved. Several other officials from the tax department enthusiastically participated in the campaign.
In a heartwarming display of social responsibility, an additional cleanliness drive was organized by Income Tax Officer, Katra, Vijay Chaudhary, at Disha Chhatrawas, Katra. This facility provides a home for orphans, destitute children, single-parent families, and those affected by terrorism. Rajiv Gubgotra, Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, Jammu, provided valuable guidance for this noble cause.
The cleanliness drive in Jammu was led by Commissioner of Income Tax, Baljeet Kaur, and Joint Commissioner of Income Tax Rahul Padha, along with the dedicated officers and officials of the Income Tax Department in Jammu.
What truly stood out in these endeavors was the remarkable turnout of government officials and their families, including children, local dignitaries, tax professionals, volunteers from Viraj Kala Kendra Jammu, members of civil society in Jammu, and enthusiastic volunteers. Together, they embarked on the vital mission of revitalizing Jammu’s cleanliness quotient and offered “Shramdaan” (voluntary labor) as part of this nationwide campaign.
Acknowledging the significance of this initiative, Baljeet Kaur, Commissioner of Income Tax, Jammu, emphasized, “The launch of this cleanliness drive is an embodiment of our department’s unwavering commitment to social responsibility. We firmly believe that a clean and hygienic environment is the cornerstone of a prosperous society. Through our collective endeavors, we aim to set a benchmark that inspires the entire city to embrace a culture of cleanliness.” She also extended her gratitude to all officers, officials, their families, members of civil society, and volunteers for actively participating in this cleanliness drive and making it a grand success. Baljeet Kaur also extended her thanks to officials of Jammu Development Authority and Jammu Municipal Corporation for their logistical support.
The cleanliness drive received widespread appreciation from the general public, who admired the Income Tax Department for not only contributing to tax collection but also being aware of its social responsibilities, which play a crucial role in nation-building.
In Srinagar, Principal Commissioner Manoj Pal Singh took the opportunity to interact with visiting tourists and local houseboat operators. He emphasized the virtue of cleanliness and highlighted the vital importance of public participation in ensuring sustainable development for the future and the well-being of coming generations.
The Income Tax Department’s Swachhata Hi Seva 2023 initiative is more than just a cleanliness drive; it’s a symbol of commitment to social responsibility and a cleaner, greener India. It’s a reminder that every citizen has a role to play in shaping a better tomorrow.
