Srinagar, February 12, 2024: Member of Parliament from Anantnag, Hasnain Masoodi, has criticized the recently presented Jammu and Kashmir Interim Budget 2023-24, claiming it falls short in addressing critical areas and pressing social issues.Masoodi highlighted a significant reduction in expenditures related to crucial welfare schemes, affecting sectors such as agriculture, education, health, and social welfare. The implications of these cuts on the well-being and development of the region are now under scrutiny. While acknowledging positive initiatives like Lakhpati Didi, Cervical cancer vaccination, and the Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana for renewable energy, Masoodi expressed concerns about the budget’s lack of attention to other vital schemes, including PM Krishi Sinchai Yojna and Umbrella Schemes for SCs, STs, and other marginalized groups. The budget faced criticism for not adequately addressing crucial areas such as strengthening democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. The absence of elected local bodies (ULB and Panchayats) and a legislature has been underscored, raising questions about democratic representation.Masoodi highlighted challenges in the agriculture sector, including a notable decrease in saffron production. The absence of new tourism destinations and circuits, coupled with strain in the healthcare sector due to staff deficits, signals the need for targeted budgetary allocations and strategies.Perhaps most critically, Masoodi pointed out the budget’s failure to provide a roadmap for tackling pressing issues such as unemployment, inflation, and administration inertia. The absence of comprehensive planning and strategies to address economic and governance challenges has raised eyebrows.
