Jammu and Kashmir, January 15, 2024:Mir Arifa Jan, State President of the Nationalist Mahila Congress, NCP, has raised a crucial concern regarding the implementation of the Central Daily Wagers Act and the Central Minimum Wages Act in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Central Daily Wagers Act and Minimum Wages Act are designed to ensure fair wages, job security, and the overall well-being of workers, especially those in unskilled and semi-skilled roles. Despite the Central Government setting minimum wages for various employments, a significant gap has been noted in Jammu and Kashmir, where daily wagers receive only Rs.300 per day, falling below the stipulated minimum. In a letter to the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir (U.T), Mir Arifa Jan urged urgent attention to the matter, emphasizing key points: prompt adoption and implementation of the Central Daily Wagers Act, strict compliance with the Minimum Wages Act by revising wages for various categories according to Central Government rates, and periodic reviews, not exceeding five years, to align minimum wages with changing economic conditions.Mir Arifa Jan believes the Chief Secretary’s intervention is vital to securing the rights of daily wage workers. The commitment to fair wages and working conditions is viewed as a significant step toward the overall development of the region under the Central Wages Act.The Nationalist Mahila Congress anticipates positive changes through the swift implementation of the Central Wages Act in Jammu and Kashmir U.T, aiming to benefit daily wage workers and foster equitable employment practices in the region.
