New Delhi, Apr 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday highlighted the success of the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) as the flagship scheme completed 11 years, stating that it has empowered millions of Indians by providing them access to credit and opportunities for self-employment.
Reflecting on the journey of the scheme, the Prime Minister said it has instilled confidence among people to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.
“PM Mudra Yojana has redefined access to credit by empowering millions with the confidence to dream and the means to fulfil it,” Modi said in a post on X.
He added that by removing barriers and trusting the aspirations of citizens, the initiative has strengthened the spirit of enterprise across the country.
“PM Mudra Yojana reflects an economic ethos where opportunities are accessible, initiatives are encouraged and every dream is given the support to grow,” he said.
Marking the milestone, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that over the past 11 years, more than ₹40 lakh crore worth of 58 crore loans have been disbursed under the scheme, significantly boosting self-employment and small industries.
“In 11 years of MUDRA, the government has empowered small traders and startups by providing collateral-free loans, giving new strength to self-employment and small industries,” Shah said, adding that nearly two-thirds of the loans have been given to women, marking a major step towards women’s empowerment.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also described the scheme as a transformative initiative that has reshaped the credit landscape for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and individual entrepreneurs.
She said the scheme, launched on April 8, 2015, was aimed at “funding the unfunded” by providing collateral-free loans to small and micro enterprises engaged in non-corporate and non-farm activities.
According to official data, more than 57.79 crore loans amounting to over ₹40.07 lakh crore have been sanctioned under PMMY so far, benefiting millions across the country.
Highlighting its inclusive nature, Sitharaman said a significant share of loans has been extended to women entrepreneurs and first-time business owners, contributing to financial inclusion and grassroots economic growth.
The scheme offers loans under four categories — Shishu, Kishor, Tarun and Tarun Plus — catering to different stages of business development, with funding support of up to ₹20 lakh.
Officials said the initiative has played a crucial role in promoting entrepreneurship, especially among youth, women, and marginalised sections, while reducing dependence on informal lending systems.
The government reiterated that the Mudra Yojana will continue to play a key role in strengthening India’s micro-enterprise ecosystem and supporting the vision of building a self-reliant and developed nation by 2047.
