New Delhi, May 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held separate high-level meetings with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi in New Delhi, reaffirming India’s growing strategic engagement with key Indo-Pacific partners amid evolving regional and global challenges.
The discussions centred around expanding cooperation in defence, trade, emerging technologies, supply chain resilience and maintaining a free, open and secure Indo-Pacific region.
During his meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Prime Minister Modi expressed satisfaction over the rapid growth of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
The two leaders discussed enhancing defence collaboration, boosting trade and investment ties, expanding cooperation in advanced technologies and strengthening resilient supply chains in view of growing geopolitical and economic uncertainties across the world.
Both sides reiterated their shared commitment towards ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and stressed the importance of deeper cooperation among like-minded democratic nations.
Sharing details of the meeting on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi said, “Happy to receive Senator Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia. We discussed the growing India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in areas such as defence, trade, technology and ensuring supply chain resilience. India and Australia will continue to work for a free, open, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific.”
The meeting comes at a time when India and Australia are steadily expanding cooperation under bilateral and multilateral frameworks including the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue grouping comprising India, Australia, Japan and the United States.
Later, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi called on Prime Minister Modi and held discussions on strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, which both countries consider central to regional peace and economic growth in Asia.
Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed the vital role of India-Japan relations in promoting stability, prosperity and sustainable development across the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in strategic sectors, infrastructure development, connectivity, trade, investment and regional security issues. They also reviewed ongoing bilateral initiatives and explored opportunities for greater collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
In a post on X after the meeting, Prime Minister Modi said, “Delighted to receive Mr. Toshimitsu Motegi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan. Reaffirmed the vital role of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership in advancing peace, stability and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific and beyond.”
India and Japan share deep strategic and economic ties, with cooperation spanning high-speed rail projects, infrastructure investments, maritime security and emerging technologies.
The meetings assume significance as India continues to strengthen diplomatic and strategic engagement with major Indo-Pacific partners amid increasing global focus on regional security, supply chain diversification and economic resilience.
The engagements also come ahead of important regional and multilateral discussions expected to focus on maritime security, trade cooperation and strategic stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
