New Delhi, : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday made a strong appeal to Members of Parliament to support the Women’s Reservation Bill, asserting that the time has come to ensure rightful representation for women in India’s legislative bodies.
Ahead of voting in the Lok Sabha on the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which proposes 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, the Prime Minister urged MPs to rise above political differences and take a decision in the national interest.
“Crores of women are watching us… our intent and our decisions. I once again request that everyone support the amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam,” Modi said in a message posted on X.
He described the legislation as a historic opportunity to do justice to women and strengthen democratic participation.
“For nearly four decades, this issue of women’s reservation in legislative bodies has been inordinately delayed. Now is the time to ensure that half of the nation’s population receives its rightful due in decision-making,” he said.
The Prime Minister also urged MPs to act with sensitivity and responsibility.
“I would like to appeal to all members of Parliament… Please reflect upon your conscience, remembering the women in your own families. Please do not deprive our ‘nari shakti’ of new opportunities,” he said.
Alongside the Women’s Reservation Bill, the Lok Sabha is also set to vote on the Delimitation Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, which aim to redraw constituencies and increase the strength of the Lok Sabha to 816 seats to facilitate implementation of the quota.
Modi noted that extensive discussions on the legislation had already taken place in Parliament, with debates continuing late into the night and resuming on Friday morning.
He said the government has addressed all concerns and misconceptions surrounding the bill through facts and detailed explanations.
“All apprehensions and information gaps have been addressed,” he stated.
Calling for unity across party lines, the Prime Minister said unanimous passage of the bill would mark a significant step forward for women’s empowerment and democratic strengthening.
“On behalf of our nari shakti, I request all members not to do anything that may hurt the sentiments of women across India,” he said.
“Let us come together today to create history and ensure that the women of India receive their rightful due,” Modi added.
