Francz,(BuzzBytes): US President Donald Trump on Wednesday described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as one of the “toughest negotiators” he has dealt with and indicated that a long-awaited India-US trade agreement could be finalised soon.
Speaking to reporters after a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, Trump said both countries were making significant progress on the proposed trade pact.
“We are very close. We have been there for a little while. He is a very tough negotiator—one of the toughest,” Trump remarked while seated alongside the Indian Prime Minister.
In his characteristic style, the US President went on to praise Modi personally, saying, “He is the most beautiful looking man. He looks so nice, he is like an angel. But actually, he is very tough, he is a killer.”
Trump added that Modi’s calm and friendly demeanour often surprises people. “He looks so good, he gets you by surprise. People say he is such a nice man. I say he is very tough, a tough trader,” he said, drawing smiles from the Indian Prime Minister.
The conversation also touched upon the strong public engagements both leaders have shared in recent years. Recalling the “Howdy Modi” event held in Houston, Texas, in 2019, Trump praised Modi’s connection with the Indian community and his popularity among people.
When Prime Minister Modi mentioned the “Namaste Trump” event hosted in Ahmedabad in 2020, Trump responded by expressing his desire to visit India again.
“We will be going to India sometime in the future,” the US President said.
The bilateral meeting covered a wide range of issues, including the proposed trade agreement, defence cooperation, strategic partnership, regional security and the evolving situation in West Asia.
The interaction reflected the continuing engagement between New Delhi and Washington as both countries seek to deepen economic ties, strengthen defence collaboration and expand cooperation on global and regional challenges.
