Prime Minister says scale and reach of Unified Payments Interface a matter of pride for every Indian; transaction volume up nearly 13,000 times since 2016-17, value crosses Rs 314 lakh crore

New Delhi, Aug 25 (BuzzBytes): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today recalled the transformative journey of the Unified Payments Interface, which was rolled out a decade ago and marked a major turning point in India’s digital payments journey, and invited citizens to share their own experiences of using the platform.
Highlighting the scale and reach achieved by UPI over the past ten years, Shri Modi said that its remarkable journey is something every Indian can be proud of. The Prime Minister invited citizens to share their experiences of using UPI and how it has impacted their daily lives.

UPI was launched on August 25, 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India under the supervision of the Reserve Bank of India. Over the past decade it has become the backbone of India’s digital payments system and has also played an important role in advancing financial inclusion.
According to the figures, the number of annual transactions carried out through UPI stood at just 1.78 crore in the financial year 2016-17, a number that rose beyond 24,162 crore in 2025-26. This represents an increase of nearly 13,000 times in transaction volume.
Similarly, the value of transactions rose from a mere Rs 0.07 lakh crore in 2016-17 to nearly Rs 314 lakh crore in 2025-26, an increase of more than four thousand times.
UPI has come to be counted among the successful pillars of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure. It provides an integrated, real-time payment facility through which transactions between individuals, and between customers and merchants, can be carried out easily through a single application.
Separately, the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, in her message on the eve of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, extended her warm greetings and best wishes to all fellow citizens living in India and abroad, especially the Muslim brothers and sisters. The President said the festival of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi is an occasion to recall the preachings of Prophet Muhammad, whose teachings inspire us to follow the path of pious conduct and dutifulness, and expressed hope that the noble ideals of Prophet Muhammad inspire people to contribute actively towards building an inclusive and developed India—(BuzzBytes)
